Our ambition

Our ambition is to be in the global leadership of petrochemicals with the best indicators in terms of GHG emissions and a key player in carbon capturing through the production of materials with renewable raw materials.

Our goal

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions in scopes 1 and 2 by 15%, by 2030. Achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Our performance

We have reduced the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions by over 17% between 2008 and 2020.

Achieving 94% of the long-term goal for climate change, planned for 2020.

This reduction avoided the emission of nearly 30 million tons of CO2and is the equivalent to planting more than 200 million trees.

Mitigation Plan for Climate Change

Emission reduction

We have adopted a number of actions to encourage energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources.

As a result, over the past 13 years, we have been able to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 17%.

This effort should be reflected in achieving our intermediate goal, of reducing 15% of total greenhouse gas emission by 2030, from our current 10.8 million in 2019 (last available data) to 9.2 million tons of CO2.

Carbon
removal

Our emission compensation strategy is tied to the use of renewable raw materials as part of our portfolio. Since 2010, over its 10 years of existence, I’m green™ has avoided the emission of at least 5.54 million tons of CO2, which is equivalent to more than one year of automobile emissions in the city of São Paulo. It is worth noting that the sugarcane resin produced still captures up to 3.09 tons of carbon dioxide during its production process, contributing twice to greenhouse gas emissions and maintaining the same performance as conventional resins.

To meet the growth in the demand of society and our partners for sustainable products, which has increased considerably in recent years, we invested USD 61 million in the expansion of the production of bio-polymers. We are going to increase our production capacity for green ethylene, produced by the Triunfo industrial unit in Rio Grande do Sul, which will increase from 200,000 to 260,000 tons per year. The project, which aims to maintain Braskem in the leadership of the bio-polymer market, will be started in 2021 and should be finalized in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Carbon
capture

Based on our commitment to sustainable innovation, we have established a partnership with the University of Illinois, in the United States, to research alternatives for the development of ethylene from the capture and use of carbon dioxide (CO2) in industrial processes, especially the burning of fuel. The project is in its initial development stage and our mission is to add our know-how in marketing raw materials and polymer production. The final goal is to assess the possibility of capturing and converting the CO2 emitted in our operation into raw material for polymer production.

The final objective is to evaluate the possibility of capturing and converting the CO₂ emitted in our operation into raw material for the production of polymers.

Climate change adaptation plan

In 2014, we developed a study to identify opportunities and climatic risks in 100% of our operations. Based on this, we created an adaptation plan with actions to mitigate or reduce all major potential climatic risks. Our goal is that all actions be implemented by 2023.

In 2020, we reached 72% compliance with our Adaptation Plan, with an emphasis on the completion of actions relating to the threat of major storms/electrical discharges at all units, the potential impact of greater mapped coverage (in terms of the number of operations impacted).

As our next steps, a residual risk reassessment is planned for all potential threats with 100% of actions completed, thereby strengthening company resilience against these potential extreme events.

As part of this plan, we have the goal of ensuring that all water used by Braskem comes from an origin with a low supply risk.

Given the challenging global scenario – the water risk assessment highlighted severe droughts as being the highest potential risk in Brazil – these assessments are performed periodically and consider the quantity and quality of water required for the operation of all plants per region.

Currently, we have a water safety index of 83%, with only 18.6% of our water consumption coming from high or very high water stress sources.

Biomassa

Braskem and Veolia reached an agreement of R$ 400 million of investment to produce renewable energy with the use of steam from eucalyptus biomass in Alagoas. The project will generate 900 thousand tons of steam/year, for 20 years, which will mean a reduction in emissions of approximately 150 thousand tons of CO2 per year. In addition, it will create more than 400 direct jobs during the construction phase and approximately 100 job posts in the operation (post-work).

Carbon Pricing

Since 2016 we have implemented the Internal Carbon Pricing methodology, "Preço Sombra", with an approach aimed at risk management and potentiating opportunities in the investment decision-making process. In 2020, based on learning from the application in Brazil, a marginal abatement cost curve (MACC) was built with all potential or implemented mitigation initiatives. Based on this analysis, an update of the carbon price was made and a global pricing strategy was defined based on the "Implicit Price", with coverage in 100% of the operations in all the countries in which it operates.

CDP Water

We are part of CDP Water's "A List", which recognizes the best open capital companies in the world in relation to water use management. Today we are part of the select group of 1% of companies in the world that will enter the "A List".

CDP Weather

We are among the leading companies in climate management by CDP for the 7th consecutive time, and we have reached 77% of our climate adaptation plan, in 2021.

I'm green

We are expanding our production capacity for green ethene, a raw material produced from sugarcane ethanol and used for the production of I'm greenT, a renewable resin that captures CO2 from the atmosphere. Located in Triunfo (RS), the industrial unit of this product has a current capacity of 200 thousand tons per year and will increase to 260 thousand tons per year.

S&P/B3 ESG Index

We have been part of the B3 Carbon Efficient Index portfolio since 2011, which demonstrates the commitment of companies with the transparency of their emissions.

Solar energy purchase contracts

According to Voltalia, it consists of the purchase of solar energy, which will be consumed in the industrial units of Braskem in Brazil, adding competitive energy to its portfolio and investing in a clean and sustainable matrix.

Agreement with Canadian Solar enables the construction of a power plant in the North of Minas Gerais. The plant will have an installed capacity of 152 MWp, or enough to supply a city of 430,000 inhabitants. The generated energy will be used in the industrial units of Braskem in Brazil.

Through the contracts, the company estimates to reduce CO2 emissions by 130 thousand tons; and avoid the emission of 500 thousand tons of CO2, respectively, over two decades.

Wind Power Purchase Agreement

Braskem awarded a contract for the acquisition of wind energy from Casa dos Ventos. The corporate electric power contract (PPA) is linked to the construction of a new wind farm and provides for the supply of renewable energy for 20 years, with an estimate of avoiding the emission of about 700 thousand tons of CO2 per period. The agreements represent important advances in the company's sustainable energy strategy, in line with its efforts to expand the use of clean and sustainable energy matrixes in its operation.
