Braskem Advances in Transitioning Industrial Plants to the Free Natural Gas Market
Project covers units in ABC Paulista, Rio Grande do Sul, and Bahia, enhancing energy efficiency and reinforcing the company's decarbonization strategy

Braskem, a global petrochemical company that develops sustainable chemical and plastic solutions to improve people's lives, is advancing its energy transition plan by migrating new industrial plants to the free natural gas market. The company has completed the transition of 100% of the consumption of its units in the Greater ABC Petrochemical Complex in São Paulo and in Triunfo, Rio Grande do Sul. Additionally, it has begun a partial migration process in the Bahia region, consolidating its strategy to build a more efficient, competitive, and low-carbon energy matrix.
The migration is enabled through Voqen, Braskem's energy and natural gas trading company, which has already signed contracts with six suppliers and is expected to reach 1 million m³/day traded with free consumers by October 2025.
"We are building a modern, low-carbon energy matrix aligned with our clients' demands and Braskem's commitments to sustainable development. This is a movement that connects competitiveness and sustainability, bringing benefits to both the company and society. Each step in the energy transition is both an operational achievement and a declaration of the future," says Gustavo Checcucci, Braskem's Director of Energy and Industrial Decarbonization.
In Rio Grande do Sul, the Q2 plant began operating in the free market on August 1, 2025, with a consumption of 350,000 m³/day and an estimated monthly savings of R$2 million. In Bahia, the migration of the Q1 plant will be gradual: the first phase, with 50,000 m³/day, started on September 1. The second phase, with 300,000 m³/day, is scheduled for January 2026. The unit's total consumption is 900,000 m³/day.
These initiatives add to the completed migration in ABC Paulista, which involved the Q3, PE7, and PP4 plants, reaching over 700,000 m³/day in the free market. This move brought significant benefits such as reduced penalties, access to competitive gas, and contractual optimization, serving as a foundation for new projects in other regions.
Beyond gains in efficiency and competitiveness, the migration to the free market is directly aligned with the company's global commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2030, reinforcing its leadership in innovation and sustainability in the petrochemical sector.
"Our goal is to migrate all Braskem industrial plants to the free market by the end of 2026, following a roadmap defined with our leadership. This is a decisive step to ensure more flexibility, competitiveness, and sustainability in our operations," concludes Checcucci.
