Braskem Mobilizes Global Volunteers and Collects Nearly 6 Tons of Plastic Through WeCARE 2026 Initiatives

The initiative brought together 266 participants across 13 locations and benefited more than 1,500 people through actions focused on circular economy and climate change mitigation

Held during the week of World Environment Day, WeCARE 2026, Braskem's global corporate volunteering initiative, engaged employees and communities across 11 locations in Brazil, the United States, Mexico, Germany, and the Netherlands. In total, the initiative involved 266 participants, including 175 company employees and 57 guests, who contributed approximately 920 volunteer hours. The activities directly benefited 1,505 people and resulted in the collection and proper disposal of nearly six tons of waste, including 5.7 tons of plastic.

WeCARE has been held annually since 2019 as part of Braskem's Global Volunteer Program. The initiative encourages employees to participate in activities alongside social organizations and communities located near the company's operations and offices. "More than a campaign, WeCARE is a global movement that connects people, communities, and purpose. Our goal is to mobilize our team members to support social organizations and contribute to sustainable development in the regions where we operate," said Roberta Manzini, Braskem Sustainability Manager.

Connected Actions Across Different Communities

In Brazil, the program included eight initiatives focused on restoring community spaces, environmental education, and strengthening the circular economy. Activities included tree planting to expand green areas in Santo André and São Paulo, the revitalization of community and school gardens in Camaçari (BA), Marechal Deodoro (AL), and Nova Santa Rita (RS), as well as infrastructure improvements at a recycling cooperative in Maceió (AL), aimed at enhancing working conditions for cooperative members.

Circular economy initiatives were also highlighted through the Plastitroque program in Duque de Caxias (RJ), which encourages the proper disposal of recyclable materials through exchange programs. In Santos (SP), volunteers supported the operation of an eco-barrier designed to capture and remove floating waste before it reached the ocean. "Our goal is to benefit 500,000 people through social initiatives by 2030. The results of this edition reinforce WeCARE's role as a strategic social responsibility initiative, connecting different stakeholders around actions that generate social and environmental impact and community engagement in the regions where we operate," said Roberta.

Internationally, Braskem's mobilization involved teams from several countries. In Rotterdam, the Netherlands, volunteers took part in the Plastic Fishing initiative, removing plastic waste from canals using boats. In Germany, volunteers organized cleanup efforts around the Schkopau and Wesseling facilities. In Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, the Plastitrueque program, a waste-for-food exchange fair, promoted environmental awareness and circular economy practices within the community. In Pittsburgh, United States, activities focused on revitalizing green spaces through tree mulching and public area maintenance.

Volunteerism gained additional prominence on the international agenda following the United Nations' declaration of 2026 as the International Year of Volunteering for Sustainable Development (IVY 2026), reinforcing the role of collective action in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). WeCARE stands as an example of an integrated initiative that not only promotes corporate volunteering but also reinforces the role of companies in discussions related to circularity and climate change mitigation.
