Braskem's Vesta Project Selected for the SB COP Awards and Will Be Presented at COP30

Initiative reduces approximately 100,000 tons of CO²e per year and reinforces the role of Brazilian industry in the global energy transition

The Vesta project, developed by Braskem - a global petrochemical company that creates sustainable solutions in chemistry and plastics to improve people's lives - in strategic partnership with Siemens Energy, has been selected for the SB COP Awards, promoted by the Sustainable Business COP (SB COP). This initiative recognizes outstanding business solutions contributing to the climate agenda.
Combining technological innovation and energy efficiency, Vesta has delivered significant impacts to the operation of the cracker - Braskem's main industrial unit at the ABC Petrochemical Complex in São Paulo - establishing a new performance benchmark. Among its key results is a 7.3% reduction in energy consumption, equivalent to the energy use of a city with one million inhabitants. This savings was made possible by reducing 120,000 cubic meters of natural gas per day and cutting 20 megawatts from grid electricity consumption.
These actions have helped avoid approximately 100,000 tons of CO²e emissions per year. Additionally, the project achieved an 11% reduction in water consumption at the industrial unit, reinforcing the company's commitment to high-performance, sustainable production practices.
"Having the Vesta project recognized by the SB COP Awards reinforces Braskem's role in the energy transition and emissions reduction within the industrial sector. We're very proud of this recognition," said Gustavo Checcucci, Director of Energy and Industrial Decarbonization at Braskem.
"Siemens Energy's selection for this project was the result of a joint effort based on technical alignment and the shared aspirations of both companies to pursue sustainable industrial solutions. The business model developed for the cogeneration plant allows Braskem to focus its resources on its core business, while Siemens Energy ensures the continuous and uninterrupted supply of energy and steam," said Andre Carrasco, Head of O&M and Services at Siemens Energy Brazil.
The SB COP Awards are part of the official programming of the Sustainable Business COP (SB COP), the business arm of COP30. Its goal is to showcase real success stories in the green agenda, highlighting the private sector's contributions to topics such as energy transition, circular economy, and sustainable cities. The official presentation of the winning initiatives will take place on November 12, 2025, during the main COP30 event at Teatro SESI in Belém (PA). The program will be hybrid, featuring institutional videos and in-person participation from companies, and will be shared on platforms such as SB COP's LinkedIn, specialized media channels, CNI's YouTube playlist, and the official award e-book.

Commitment and Sustainability

The Vesta project was developed by Braskem with a focus on energy efficiency, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction, greater reliability in electricity supply, and enhanced competitiveness. The initiative completely redesigned the thermoelectric system of the industrial complex, replacing steam turbines - previously used to power large equipment - with high-speed electric motors. Additionally, it implemented a new cogeneration plant powered by hydrogen-rich residual gas, a byproduct of the industrial process with up to 80% hydrogen concentration, ensuring greater sustainable utilization.
The cogeneration solution was implemented in partnership with Siemens Energy, with motorization provided by GE, and combined dedicated governance, agile methodology, and smart use of available physical space.
"Vesta is an example of how innovation and efficiency can be combined with fast return on investment. Beyond environmental gains, the project demonstrated economic viability and can be replicated in other industrial units, expanding its positive impact across the sector," added Checcucci.
Braskem believes that industry is part of the solution. That's why the company will participate in COP30, reaffirming its role as a transformation agent in the sustainable development of industry, in pursuit of climate neutrality.
