Braskem joins UN Global Compact's Open Call for Water Action
The UN Global Compact's call seeks solutions for the global water crisis and engagement for advancing in SDG 6, which aims to ensure universal access to water and sanitation

On March 22 to 24, the United Nations (UN) held the Water Conference 2023, in New York, with the theme "Water for Sustainable Development." Heads of state, ministers, world leaders and thousands of representatives from civil society participated in the conference, where warnings were sounded on the imminent risk of a global water scarcity caused mainly by the indiscriminate use of water and by climate change.
With its strategy aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Braskem participated in the conference and, jointly with the world's 50 largest companies, adhered to the Open Call for Water Action. In a collective commitment, the private sector was called upon to engage in the search for solutions to the global water crisis and for initiatives to advance in SDG 6, which aims to ensure universal access to drinking water and sanitation.
The strategy seeks to make contributions to ensuring water security for three billion people as well as access to drinking water and sanitation for over 300 million people. By joining the Open Call for Water Action, companies undertake to act towards building water resilience in their own global operations and supply chains. They also commit to develop cooperation actions between sectors to cause positive water impacts on at least 100 priority basins listed in this water stress scenario by 2030.
Note that, in addition to SDG 6, SDG 12, which addresses ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns, with a focus on global and local actions, also is related to the planet's water issue. The Open Call for Water Action, which was held on the first day of the conference, was considered an important achievement of the global meeting by offering a unified commitment by the business sector to the Water Action Agenda.
According to Marina Rossi, Braskem's Sustainable Development Manager, who was at the conference and participated in a panel organized by the UN Global Compact in Brazil, Braskem believes that water is a resource that must be protected, preserved and managed sustainably. Since 2002, the company has invested over R$280 million in projects to improve our water efficiency and to treat the effluents generated by our industrial operations.
"Drawing on the chemical and plastic products we produce, we have worked jointly with our clients to develop water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) solutions, such as tubing, water tanks, water treatment products, among others. We also have implemented various initiatives for capturing continuous improvements in our processes involving water resources to reduce our water footprint, while also seeking water reuse projects that promote circularity. By 2030, we want to reach the mark of 100% of our water consumption coming from secure sources, which means withdrawing less water from sources that could compete with use by the general public. Today, 65.3% of the water used by Braskem's operations come from these sources. Braskem's actions are based on the requirements established by the CEO Water Mandate, a platform of the UN Global Compact formed by companies from around the world committed to advancing water management. Braskem also figures in the leadership ranking of CDP Investor Water and has joined the Water Resilience Coalition and the Race to Resilience initiatives," added Marina.
