Braskem Opens New Expanded Section of Durval de Góes Monteiro Avenue
A total of 3.4 kilometers of duplicated service roads have now been completed along one of Maceió's main urban corridors
Maceió, June 2, 2026 - Braskem has opened another newly expanded section of Durval de Góes Monteiro Avenue to traffic and officially handed it over to the Municipality. The new 1.2-kilometer stretch, located between Imperador and Carajás in the airport-to-downtown direction, was opened to motorists this Monday (June 1). The corresponding section in the opposite direction was completed earlier this year, in January. With this latest delivery, the roadway is now fully duplicated in both directions. The project is part of a broader effort to improve urban mobility in Maceió.
The expansion of Durval de Góes Monteiro Avenue is being carried out in two phases. The first phase, which covered 2.2 kilometers between Parque do Horto and the Tupan roundabout, was completed in 2024. The second phase is currently 30% complete and remains on schedule, in accordance with the timeline approved by the relevant authorities. This phase includes 3.4 kilometers of duplicated service roads between the Tupan roundabout and the BR-316 overpass. Once all work is completed, nearly six kilometers of roadway will have been expanded. When the project is fully finished, the avenue's traffic capacity is expected to increase by approximately 60%.
For drivers who regularly travel along Durval Avenue, the benefits are already being felt through shorter travel times. Joseildo Firmino, who drives through the area every day, highlights the impact of the improvements. "Traffic has improved a lot, and safety has improved as well. I used to spend almost 40 minutes on this route. Now I can reach my destination in less than half that time." Business owner Orlando Freitas believes the project will also provide a boost to local businesses. "This project has made a real difference because it has helped ease traffic congestion. The improved lighting has also had a very positive impact. All of these improvements have brought significant benefits to local businesses," he said.
Mobility for Cyclists and Pedestrians
A 5.7-kilometer bike path, included in the Durval expansion project, has already been completed. A new pedestrian overpass near Canaã is in the final stages of construction. It features a covered walkway, stairways, and two elevators to ensure accessibility for people with reduced mobility. The project also includes the construction of service roads, accessible sidewalks, a stormwater drainage system, a new power distribution network, and upgraded public lighting.
Traffic Monitoring
Artificial intelligence-powered cameras have been installed along the entire avenue. Operating around the clock, they calculate the optimal traffic signal timing at each intersection in real time based on traffic conditions. Traffic flow is monitored through the Operational Control Center (OCC).
Mobility package
The urban mobility improvements are part of the Socio-Environmental Agreement signed in December 2020 by Braskem and the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF), with the participation of the State Public Prosecutor's Office (MPE) and the Municipality of Maceió. The initiatives continue under an initial budget of BRL 360 million, adjusted annually and fully funded by Braskem. All interventions are planned by the municipality and overseen by public authorities.
The projects include the construction, expansion, or rehabilitation of 33.4 kilometers of roadways; the implementation of nearly 37 kilometers of accessible sidewalks and bike lanes; upgrades to public walkways and parking areas; new lighting and power infrastructure; stormwater drainage; and a smart traffic signal system that is already in operation.
