Encosta do Mutange

Mutange Slope

Mutange Slope, a naturally unstable area spanning 350 thousand m², is undergoing stabilization and drainage works. The old buildings are being replaced by a green space that will not only contribute to land stabilization but also expand the green area of Maceió.

For safety reasons, Mutange Slope, along with the protection area around the salt wells, was the first to be evacuated as a precaution. The families who lived in the area were supported by the Financial Compensation and Relocation Support Program and vacated their properties by April 2020.

The area stabilization project began with the demolition of unoccupied properties, which took place between January and December 2022. Next, earthworks were carried out to soften the hillside slopes, and drainage work was conducted, including the construction of drainage stairs, gutters, and pipes.

The project also features an underground drainage system integrated to the existing one, ensuring that rainwater flows into Mundaú Lagoon without overloading the slope.

To establish vegetation cover, the hydroseeding technique is being used, combining plants that help stabilize and protect the land while improving soil health.

The construction works have been divided into four phases and carried out simultaneously. See:

Interventions at Mutange Slope are outlined in the Socio-Environmental Agreement signed in December 2020 between the Federal Public Ministry and Braskem, with the participation of the Public Ministry of the State of Alagoas and the adherence of the Municipality of Maceió.
