"Melodia Sustentável" Project Inspires Creativity and Environmental Awareness Among Children in the Flexais Community
Workshops are part of a broader effort to promote positive daily habits through education and art
Maceió, December 4, 2025 - PET bottles, cans, and pieces of wood turned into musical instruments in the hands of children from the Flexais community in Bebedouro. The initiative is part of the Melodia Sustentável (Sustainable Melody) project, which, over four weekends, helped spark creativity and encourage the reuse of materials while teaching concepts of sustainability and proper waste disposal.
The activities are linked to the Environmental Education Program (PEA), part of the Flexais Urban Integration and Development Project, which promotes environmental preservation and awareness within the community.
In Melodia Sustentável , workshops were led by master craftsman Dalmo Almeida, who's well-known for creating musical instruments with children and teens, and actress Dinah Ferreira, who brought a playful, imaginative dynamic to the experience. Each session included conversations about conscious consumption and environmental care, reinforcing the importance of sustainable habits and proper waste management.
For 12-year-old student Yago Douglas Tenório dos Santos, the workshops were both fun and enriching. "We learned that we shouldn't throw trash on the street, and that many things we usually toss out, like water and soda bottles, can be turned into toys or musical instruments. We also learned how to play some of the instruments, and I thought everything was really cool," he said.
Learning by Doing
The activities help strengthen bonds between children and their families, creating a space for dialogue and collective learning. Artisan Alexsandra Francelina accompanied her daughter, 9-year-old Lorena Sophia Silva de Souza, and says she already notices positive changes in the girl's behavior. "She used to throw little candy wrappers or lollipop sticks on the ground. Now she knows she can't do that and even explains how trash harms animals and the environment. I wanted her to have fun away from the cellphone, but she also learned to recycle and take care of nature. It was wonderful," she shared.
Environmental Education
The Environmental Education Program has already carried out a number of initiatives in the Flexais community, combining learning with civic engagement. In one recent activity, local children helped plant mangrove seedlings to restore native vegetation and strengthen the local ecosystem.
The PEA also promotes workshops, lectures, and hands-on learning experiences on waste management, biodiversity preservation, and material reuse. Since the program began in 2024, 11 initiatives have been completed. These experiences have been encouraging a more environmentally conscious mindset and strengthened the sense of belonging among residents.
About the Flexais Project
The Environmental Education Program is part of the "Education, Sports, Leisure, and Environment" pillar of the Flexais Urban Integration and Development Project. The project is the result of an Agreement signed in October 2022 by the Municipality of Maceió, the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office, the Public Prosecutor's Office of the State of Alagoas, the Federal Public Defender's Office, and Braskem. Of the 23 planned initiatives to reduce socioeconomic isolation and boost the local economy, 16 have already been implemented, with the remaining projects in progress.
