Braskem signs settlements and closes public-interest civil action of residents and socio-environmental public-interest civil action in Maceió

  • Amendment to the January settlement delimits the vacancy area by including 5,500 properties, totaling about 15,000 properties
  • Socio-environmental settlement includes urban remediation actions, as well as stabilization and monitoring of the geological phenomenon
  • Settlements close public-interest civil actions and stand as an important advance in relation to the geological event in Alagoas
  • With about 9,000 families outside the risk area, a new stage allows planning the future of the neighborhoods impacted

Maceió, January 11, 2021 - Braskem and the authorities of Alagoas signed settlements in the Residents' Public-Interest Civil Action and in the Socio-environmental Public-Interest Civil Action, closing these lawsuits. Under the agreement, Braskem will take additional measures to promote the safety and financial compensation of residents in the neighborhoods impacted by the geological phenomenon in Maceió and will carry out socio-environmental and urban remediation in the region.

The first agreement, in the so-called Residents' ACP, refers to an amendment to the document signed in January with the Public Defender's Office of the State of Alagoas (DPE), the Federal Prosecution Office (MPF), the Public Prosecution Office of the State of Alagoas (MPE), and the Federal Public Defender's Office (DPU). This amendment sets the vacancy of the areas impacted and includes about 5,500 properties in the Financial Compensation and Relocation Support Program, which will now have about 15,000 properties in its scope.

The second agreement, made with MPF under Socio-environmental ACP, with MPE as the consenting intervening party, includes actions relating to environmental, social, and urban impacts in the region. It provides that a diagnosis and a work plan will be prepared by an independent company, which will recommend measures to remediate, mitigate, or compensate for environmental impacts, with amounts yet to be ascertained.

For urban remediation, interventions will be made in the vacated areas, in addition to preservation of the historical and cultural heritage, urban mobility actions, social compensation, and compensation for collective damages. Interested public agencies are expected to participate, as well as popular consultation mechanisms.

For the stabilization of rock salt wells and soil monitoring, the Company will continue with the implementation of the actions of the mine closure plan prepared by Braskem and in the process of approval by the Brazilian National Mining Agency (ANM), with measures that may be adjusted until the stability of the wells is confirmed.
