Environmental education program of Braskem receives a title by UNESCO

A certificate that rises the program Cinturão Verde (Green Belt Program) to the condition of Atlantic Forest Advanced Program will be given in Maceio on the next 29th

The Green Belt Program of Braskem, in Maceio, will receive on the nest 29th the certificate of Atlantic Forest Advanced Program in a ceremony that will take place at the Zumbi dos Palmares Institute. This title is given by the National Council of the Reserve of Atlantic Forest Biosphere, an institution that counts on the approval of Unesco, Environment Ministry and Ibama. "It is very important for Braskem, to be given this title, because it represents the recognition of the work we"ve been developing for the community in Alagoas, especially for those who live around the sites", states "Francisco Ruga, Industrial Director of the Vinylics Unit in Maceio.

The Green Belt is situated in a 150 ha area, localized between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mundaú pond. It is an environment safety line where several species of typical animals of the region are preserved. Besides including more than 300 animals of wild fauna and keep the conditions for their reproduction, the reserve also received around 180 thousand seeds of 200 vegetal species.

In order to revitalize 20 hectares of this environment, Braskem invested US$ 8 million in a innovative project to recuperate some areas, applied mainly to the dunes protection, to the Atlantic Forest landscape improvement and to the soil recuperation. In partnership with the scientific community of Alagoas, more specifically the department of Biology of Alagoas Federal University (UFAL), Braskem intends to consolidate the technology implemented and through this to reproduce the experience in some other areas of the Green Belt.

The Green Belt not only offers the visitors the contact with nature, approaching the company and the community but it also has an Environment Education Center where hydroponics, landscaping and apiculture courses are offered bringing benefits to needy students from the neighbor areas. This center works together with the Lagoa Viva Program, which is another environment education program promoted by Braskem. Nowadays, the reserve receives more than 15 thousand visitors. Braskem was awarded with the prize Criadouro Conservacionista da Fauna e Flora Brasileira by Ibama.
