NAA Retailing Corporation, one of the companies in the Narita International Airport Corporation (NAA) Group and the operator of the Fa-So-La SHOPS at Narita International Airport, has become the first airport retail operator in Japan to introduce shopping bags certified with Biomass Mark 95. Developed in collaboration with JALUX Inc. and Braskem’s I’m green™ bio-based, the initiative reflects a shared commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the use of renewable materials in airport retail operations.

 

 

The new shopping bags are made primarily with I’m green™ bio-based polyethylene and achieved Biomass Mark 95 certification, indicating that at least 95% of their material comes from renewable biomass, reducing the shopping bags carbon footprint. They represent one of the highest levels of bio-based content available under Japan's Biomass Mark certification system while maintaining the same usability, durability, and performance as conventional plastic shopping bags.

 

 


 

 


By maximizing the use of I’m green™ bio-based PE, NAA Retailing expects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 700 tons annually compared with its previous shopping bags, which were made from a combination of bio-based, recycled, and fossil-based plastics.

Beyond reducing emissions, the initiative demonstrates how increased adoption of renewable carbon can help accelerate the transition toward a low-carbon circular economy.

The introduction of these bags at Fa-So-La SHOPS demonstrates how major transportation and retail hubs can successfully incorporate renewable-source materials into high-volume consumer applications while maintaining a seamless customer experience. Through this collaboration, NAA, NAA Retailing, JALUX, and Braskem's I'm green™ bio-based polyethylene are advancing the adoption of renewable materials in everyday retail operations and supporting broader efforts toward a circular economy.
