Automotive Industry

During the 1960s, plastic became part of the automotive industry in a relevant way. This participation increased significantly from 1990, providing a massive weight reduction, lower fuel consumption, and more design flexibility, allowing more rounded lines and bolder models. Currently, cars have, on average, 50 kg of parts and accessories – internal, external and even close to the engine – made of plastic, replacing roughly 350 kg of steel.

Chemistry also plays a key role in automotive production. It is present in automotive paints, lubricants, car tires and the rubbers that make up the equipment in automobiles, internal parts, and the body of the vehicle. In addition, Braskem specializes in the PIB (polyisobutene), a material patented by Braskem that increases gas impermeability in tires, making the product lighter and providing greater savings of materials and energy.

PE Fuel Tanks

The use of polyethylene in the production of fuel tanks enables combining high safety with reduced weight and a greater degree of freedom in the blow-molding process compared to the use of metal.

PP Panel

Braskem’s portfolio of resins for application in automotive compounds is highly oriented to innovation. The results are seen mainly in terms of performance, durability and appearance in internal applications in the vehicle.


Butadiene and the Unilene® resin are inputs used in the synthetic rubber industry are used in the manufacture of tires and rubber components in general.
